‘Hoos blow five-point lead in final minute

Virginia could not hold a five-point lead in the final minute of regulation, and Miami held off a UVa. rally in the final minute of overtime to knock off the Cavs 70-68 on Saturday.

Virginia (12-11, 3-6 ACC) led 53-48 with the ball with less than a minute to go. A turnover was followed by a Joe Harris miss on the front end of a one-and-one. After Mustapha Farrakhan made two free throws to extend the lead to 55-50 with 37 seconds left, Rion Brown drained a three to bring Miami (14-9, 3-6 ACC) back within two.

Farrakhan then missed the back end of a pair of free throws with 22 seconds left to leave the door open for the Hurricanes. Sammy Zeglinski fouled Brown on a three-point attempt with 13 seconds to go, and Brown drained all three from the stripe to knot the game at 56.

Akil Mitchell missed a potential game-winner with a second on the clock to send the game to overtime.

An Adrian Thomas three and a Reggie Johnson jumper gave Miami a five-point lead with 3:28 to go, but Virginia clawed back to within two at 68-66 and had Harris back at the line with five seconds to go with a chance to tie. Harris missed both ends of the two-shot foul, and Thomas snared the rebound, was fouled and made two free throws with two seconds to go to seal it.

Farrakhan had 20 points for Virginia, and Harris added 18. Thomas led the ‘Canes with 20, including a 6-for-12 effort from three-point range.
