On overall performance
“There’s been improvement every week. Certainly the quarterback made some plays; he made some freshman errors, but he made some nice throws. We had some catches, we got some jukes. The offensive line, once again because of the patchwork, we need to be better over there and create some more space for our running back. We’re getting better over there but it’s certainly not where we have to go. We’re making progress but we’re still making mistakes.
“We played smarter and we helped ourselves schematically and that has helped. Going through our tapes this morning there’s still a lot of room for individual improvement. We’re making some plays and giving ourselves a chance to win.”
On progress of receivers
“They are getting better but there’s a way to go. We still have a lot of issues over there and a lot of subtleties that may not show to the fan or the naked eye that are just issues that we have to manage our way through. They’re working hard, they’re a good bunch of kids and the future is bright for them but next week is next week.”
On “one-game-at-a-time” mentality working
“It has to work. It was the way I was weaned. You have to have a long list of goals but you have to take one step and one step and find out at the end where you are. You always have to be making improvement, that’s the overriding factor and that’s the one-game-at-a-time factor.”
On level of satisfaction after absorbing mistakes and still winning at Duke
“You want to look at yourself all the time and critique yourself and understand here’s where you have to improve, but it takes a certain amount of resolve to keep plugging away when you make those mistakes and understand you have to eliminate them because we’re not always going to be fortunate enough to come out on the positive end of a game like that, making those mistakes.”
On any offensive linemen coming back
“Ian White did participate (Saturday), so that was a good sign even though he had very limited practice, which is bad. We didn’t even take him [Nate Richman] so that was not a good sign and we’ll wait to see what the 48 hours did for him. [Rich] Lapham, there was encouragement when we left last week. I don’t know if we’ll see him today or not but we’ll find out more on Tuesday.”
On coaching with so many injuries
“Without getting too philosophical, when you have problems they either overwhelm you or they energize you, and we have guys around here that get energized by it. We know what we have to do and there are no excuses.”
