Virginia State Police are looking for multiple suspects in connection with a series of shootings on a stretch of Interstate 64 in Western Albemarle County that sent two people to the hospital.

“We believe it’s more than one suspect. Now, that doesn’t mean that they were firing simultaneously at these sites. We believe at one of the sites based on some witness information that it was more than one individual there,” State Police Superintendent Steven Flaherty said at a press conference today in Charlottesville.

Flaherty confirmed that the first shooting was reported to 911 at 12:10 a.m. A car traveling west on I-64 was shot at apparently from an overpass at Va. 690, one of three identified locations from where shots were fired.

The other confirmed shooting locations, Flaherty said, were at an off-ramp at Exit 114 on I-64 near Ivy and at a Virginia Department of Transportation shop at Yancey Mills.

Four occupied vehicles traveling on I-64 were shot at, Flaherty said. An unoccupied VDOT vehicle was also shot at the Yancey Mills location.

Two people were treated at Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville for injuries related to the shootings, Flaherty said.

Flaherty said this morning that investigators are still working the three identified crime scenes and following up on leads that have been developed in the past several hours.

“We’re getting calls in, again, and it’s people telling about anything that was suspicious. Some were reporting gunshots that we’ve not been able to verify were gunshots. So right at this particular point in time, we don’t have any credible evidence that there were shots fired at anything else or from any other location. But we’re following up on that,” Flaherty said.
