Patricia Bell: Make sure you’re registered

AFP

Letter from Patricia Bell, Waynesboro

Regardless of your political inclinations, you marginalize yourself if you do not register to vote. Take responsibility for yourself and your community by registering to vote before the deadline. Only those who are registered can participate, and voter registration closes in Virginia 29 days before the November election.

It is up to you. No one can do it for you.

Be aware that voting will go smoothly if you update your registration. Go see your Registrar if you have changed your name, moved since the last time you voted, want an absentee ballot, filled out a voter registration form at a location other than the Registrar’s Office (it may not have been processed).

One can register in Virginia if he/she is an American citizen, at least 18 years of age by the date of the election, a resident of Virginia, not a convicted felon without rights to vote restored legally, and not adjudicated by a court of law as mentally incompetent.

On Election Day you do not want to have errors or confusion or to be denied the vote because YOU did not take the time to make sure that you are up-to-date with all the federal and State laws on voting.

Don’t throw away a precious right that millions have longed for, died for, or never got.
