Waynesboro Police have arrested a city woman on charges of knowingly filing a false police report on Dec. 7 alleging that she had been the victim of a sexual assault.
Wendy Michele Earney, 36, reported to police that she had been attacked in her home by a 6-foot tall white man who fled the scene in a 2002 Ford Explorer, sending police on a sweep of the city looking for potential suspects.
Sgt. Kelly Walker told AugustaFreePress.com last week that several suspects were picked up and held for questioning in the course of the investigation into the report.
Walker also said the police department handled several calls from city residents concerned about a possible attacker on the loose.
The charge against Earney is a misdemeanor. She is free on a personal recognizance bond.
