One-woman show coming to Wayne Theatre

Chris Graham

dirty barbieThe critically-acclaimed “Dirty Barbie and Other Girlhood Tales” is coming to the Wayne Theatre in Waynesboro June 21-23.

In 1978, Denise Stewart’s mother, newly widowed, moved her family from Wyoming to a tiny town in North Carolina. Stewart takes on that massive change and the chaos that followed in her one-woman storytelling show, spinning tales about scarlet fever, scotch over ice, and girls gone witty.

“Dirty Barbie and Other Girlhood Tales” will be staged in the Custin Cabaret, an intimate setting on the second floor of the Wayne Theatre that should help bring the audience closer to the story.

Tickets for the 8 p.m. shows are all general admission and cost $12. Seating is limited to 60 patrons per performance.

“We’re excited to have this show as the first performance of its kind in the Custin Cabaret,” said Tracy Straight, the executive director of the Wayne Theatre. “The venue is perfect for this show. It will really help bring the story to life.”

Stewart’s “Dirty Barbie and Other Girlhood Tales” has been performed at Assembly Hall, Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Scotland, 59E59, East to Edinburgh Festival, New York City, The Corner Store, Washington, DC, the Diana Wortham Theatre, Asheville, NC, the Lee Street Theatre, Salisbury, NC and many Virginia venues including IX Arts Park, Louisa Performing Arts Center, Four County Players, Live Arts, Hamner Theater (VA premiere) and the Venue on 35th, Norfolk.

Tickets and more information at (540) 943-9999 or online at WayneTheatre.org.
