Gallup: Plurality in favor of health-care reform

A narrow plurality of Americans support the passage of a new health-care bill, according to a Gallup poll released on Monday.

Forty percent of those surveyed in the Gallup poll say they support passage of health-care reform, with 36 percent opposed and 24 percent saying they are still undecided on the issue.

The Gallup analysis reports that with the leanings of those who say they are undecided are taken into account, 51 percent of Americans favor or are leaning toward reform with 41 percent opposing it or leaning toward opposition.

Inside the numbers:

– Democrats favor health-care reform, with 66 percent saying they would advise their member of Congress to vote for it, with just 5 percent favoring a “no” vote. Republicans are solidly opposed by 65 percent to 16 percent. Independents are more likely to oppose (43 percent) than to favor (34 percent) health-care reform at this point.

– The new poll finds 36 percent of seniors (aged 65 and older) in favor, 41 percent opposed, and 23 percent not having an opinion. Young adults – those 18 to 29 years old – are most supportive, with 43 percent in favor, 23 percent opposed, and 34 percent undecided. Americans between the ages of 30 and 64 are evenly divided, with 40 percent in favor, 38 percent opposed, and 22 percent undecided.
