More than 280 residents from Waynesboro, Staunton and Augusta County joined the Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s® and united in a movement to reclaim the future for millions on Saturday, September 10 at Ridgeview Park. Participants raised more than $57,000 to fund Alzheimer’s care, support and research programs.
“This year’s Walk surpassed its goal of $56,000 showing the residents of Greater Augusta want to do what they can to end Alzheimer’s and that this is a cause that is very important to them,” said Sue Friedman, president and CEO of the Central and Western Virginia Chapter.
Dream Weavers [photo attached} was the top fundraising team at this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s, raising $10,895. The team has participated in the Walk for 9 years. Team Captain Jen Weaver lost her mother to Alzheimer’s disease in 2009. Since 2009, the team which includes Jen’s father Robert (George) Weaver and many relatives and friends has raised over $78,000.00 .
“Over seven years have gone by since my mother, Grace, passed away. In that time, progress has been made in the fight against Alzheimer’s. The battle,
however, is far from over. Our team continues to walk in memory of all those who have been struck with this cruel disease and left us much too early. We walk in honor of all the caregivers who inspire us with their unwavering care and devotion thru the long, difficult journey. We walk so the next generation may know a world without Alzheimer’s. We walk for all those currently suffering from this disease, so they know they are not alone. By raising money and awareness, we can make a difference,” said Weaver.
The top fundraising individual was Brandy Burrus, a member of the Sweet Soles team. She raised $1,578.
Walk to End Alzheimer’s participants did more than complete the 2.3 mile Walk. They learned about Alzheimer’s disease and how to get involved with this critical cause, from advocacy opportunities, clinical studies and support programs and services. The event also included an emotional tribute to those who have experienced or are experiencing Alzheimer’s.
Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today’s more than 5 million Americans to as many as 16 million by 2050.
