chris graham radioWTJU, the University of Virginia’s public radio station, is broadcasting its annual Jazz Marathon from Sept. 26-Oct. 2, featuring live in-studio performances and 24-hour jazz and blues specials.

“Jazz is a living, breathing art form – from the classic jazz masters to today’s emerging talent,” said WTJU General Manager Nathan Moore. “This music matters deeply. It’s part of our shared musical heritage and part of our musical universe today. Stations like WTJU work to keep this exciting, living, spontaneous music alive, but we rely on listener contributions to make that happen.”

In order to support WTJU and this vibrant art form, WTJU encourages listeners to donate – either one-time gifts or recurring monthly donations at WTJU.net/donate. WTJU hopes to raise at least $40,000 throughout the week in support of its jazz and blues programming.

WTJU’s 2016 Jazz Marathon features seven days of live in-studio performances broadcast live from 7pm to 9pm September 26th to October 2nd. Live performances include appearances by Zuzu’s Hot Five, Greg Howard, Bobby Reed, and John D’earth. A full schedule of live performance is also available on WTJU.net.

On Sunday, October 2nd at 4pm, WTJU will broadcast live from The Southern Café and Music Hall, featuring An Afternoon with Paulien, a theatre show by Charlottesville-based Dutch singer Paulien. This performance is the perfect blend of music and culture, presented in the intimate setting of The Southern. Tickets are $15 in advance at TheSouthernCville.com or $17 at the door. Proceeds benefit WTJU.

The Jazz Marathon will also feature the return of Tom Morgan, former host of The Bartender’s Bop on WTJU, as well as Professor Bebop’s Celebration of the 100th birthday of Slim Galliard, jazz singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist.

All donations are tax-deductible and go a long way to ensuring WTJU stays strong and independent.

WTJU enriches the culture of Virginia and extends the educational mission of the University of Virginia by bringing together diverse individuals and communities through exceptional music and conversation. On the air since 1957, WTJU presents original, rich, and diverse programming in non-commercial radio broadcasting, digital media, live music concerts, and educational programs.
