JMU summit to address ethics, policies, benefits of drones, robots

jmu dronesRepresentatives of government agencies, businesses and the general public will gather Wednesday, Aug. 17, and Thursday, Aug. 18 at JMU to form working groups and participate in discussion devoted to the benefits, capabilities and issues of unmanned technology such as robots and drones.

“We’re bringing Virginia’s UAV community together to produce actionable objectives toward Governor McAuliffe and Senator Warner’s vision for the New Virginia Economy,” said Nick Swayne, director of 4-VA.

David Hinton, senior advisor for unmanned systems, office of the secretary of technology of Virginia, will be the keynote speaker Wednesday about 6 p.m. at Lakeview Hall adjacent to the Port Republic Road entrance to the JMU campus. Representatives from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the FAA will also participate.

The summit will continue from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Thursday at Lakeview Hall and will feature presentations and facilitated group discussions on research, curriculum, industry, ethics and policies.

About 60 people registered to attend the event.
