Bridgewater College to present German film festival March 21-23

film2Bridgewater College will present a German film festival March 21-23. All films are subtitled in English and will be shown at 7 p.m. in Cole Hall.

This festival of German-language films, co-sponsored by the college’s Department of World Languages and Cultures and the Office for Study Abroad, is free and open to the public.

Nominated for six Academy Awards, Das Boot will be shown Monday, March 21. It is 1942 and the German submarine fleet is heavily engaged in the so-called “Battle of the Atlantic” to harass and destroy British shipping. Das Boot is the story of one such U-Boat crew. The film examines how these submariners maintained their professionalism as sailors while attempting to accomplish impossible missions.

The Reader, set in post-World War II, will be presented Tuesday, March 22. Nearly a decade after an affair with an older woman came to a mysterious end, law student Michael Berg re-encounters his former lover as she defends herself in a war-crime trial.The Reader is a story about truth and reconciliation.

Schultze Gets the Blues will be screened Wednesday, March 23. Schultze, an accordion player and recently retired salt miner living in an East German village, has a passion for Polka music. His taste in music changes drastically one night when he hears a zydeco tune on the radio and he begins a musical odyssey to Louisiana, the heart of zydeco and Cajun music.

Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Founded in 1880, it was the state’s first private, coeducational college. Today, Bridgewater College is home to more than 1,800 undergraduate students.
