virginia tennisThe top-ranked Virginia men’s tennis team (6-0) defeated No. 16 San Diego, 4-0, in the opening round of the 2016 Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Men’s Team Indoor Championship being held Feb. 12-15 at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.

The Cavaliers will face No. 10 Wake Forest in the quarterfinals on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 3:30 p.m. after Wake Forest downed No. 5 Oklahoma 4-1 in Friday’s opening round.

“I thought San Diego was an outstanding team and played a great match,” said Virginia head coach Brian Boland. “I thought we started out in doubles a little slow, but then we started to play a little bit better. It was good to get the doubles point, because it was really close. The momentum turned when we swept the first sets in singles. I was really impressed with the way the guys competed. I don’t think we played as well as we can, but we competed well.”

Senior Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.) and junior Luca Corinteli (Alexandria, Va.) opened the match with a dominant 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles. Junior J.C. Aragone (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and sophomore Collin Altamirano (Sacramento, Calif.) battled for a 7-5 victory at No. 3 to secure the doubles point.

After the Cavaliers each won the first sets of their singles matches, Altamirano put UVA up 2-0 by closing out a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Filip Vittek a No. 3 singles. Sophomore Henrik Wiersholm (Kirkland, Wash.) earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Jaan Kononov at No. 6.  Shane closed out the match with a 7-5, 6-1 victory at No. 1.

The ITA National Indoors field includes the top-16 teams in the latest ITA rankings. Dual matches are scheduled at 9 a.m., 12 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Friday through Sunday with the championship match set for 11 a.m. on Monday. Each of the 16 teams is guaranteed three matches during the championship. Fans can attend the four-day championship free of charge.
