Women’s tennis: No. 7 Virginia falls to No. 1 Vanderbilt at ITA Indoors

virginia tennisThe No. 7 Virginia (4-3) women’s tennis team closed play at the ITA National Team Indoors on Sunday (Feb. 7), falling to No. 1 Vanderbilt  (5-1) by a score of 4-0.

Vanderbilt picked up the doubles point with wins on courts two and three in singles. The Commodore pairing of Frances Altick and Fernanda Contreras defeated the Cavaliers’ Victoria Olivarez (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Taylor Wingo (Newport News, Va.) by a score of 6-0 on court three. Vanderbilt’s Astra Sharma and Ellie Yates defeated Virginia’s Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) by a score of 6-3 on court two to clinch the 1-0 lead in the overall match.

In singles play, the Commodores picked up wins on courts three, four and six to clinch the match.

Freshman Erica Susi (Vero Beach, Fla.) fell 6-1, 6-2 on court six to  Vanderbilt’s Yates, before Olivarez fell 6-3, 6-4 on court four to the Commodores’ Colton.  Nauta, who is ranked No. 30 nationally in singles, then fell 7-6, 6-0 on court three to No. 33 Sharma of Vanderbilt as the Commodores clinched the match.

Danielle Collins, who is ranked No. 4 nationally, led No. 24 Sydney  Campbell, 6-3, 5-3 when her match was suspended. Also suspended was No. 8 Elbaba’s match with No. 15 Altick after the players split sets and Meghan Kelley’s match with Contreras. Kelley led the match 7-5 , 2-1 at the time of suspension.

Virginia will return to action on Monday, Nov. 15 at 4 p.m. when the Cavaliers host No. 13 Alabama at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. Play on the Boyd Tinsley Courts is set to begin at 4 p.m.
