Capitol Hill: Perriello, Hoyer, to discuss PAYGO at UVa.

Congressman Tom Perriello and Congressman Steny Hoyer, the House Majority Leader, will discuss fiscal responsibility and deficit reduction with the College Leaders class at the Sorensen Institute at the University of Virginia next week.

They will be addressing the college students because the younger generation will need to deal with the crippling effects of the $1.3 trillion deficit inherited from the previous Administration. Last week, the President requested that Congress reinstate statutory pay-as-you-go (or PAYGO) rules, which simply means that Congress can only spend a dollar if it saves a dollar somewhere else. This week, Reps. Hoyer and Perriello joined more than 150 of their colleagues in the U.S. House in introducing legislation that will reinstate this common-sense law.

Local News: New traffic pattern at Exit 247 interchange in Harrisonburg

A major traffic pattern change and signal work will occur next week as part of a project to redesign traffic flow at the Interstate 81 exit 247 at Route 33 in Harrisonburg.

Mast arms for the Route 33 traffic signal will be installed on Monday, June 22, at 9 p.m. Once installation is complete, the signal will go into flash mode.

The signal will be placed into full operation between 11 p.m. Monday, June 29, and 2 a.m., Tuesday, June 30. After the signal is in full operation, the southbound onramp to I-81 will be closed permanently and traffic will be switched to the new pattern.

Motorists are urged to drive with caution in the area of the new signal as drivers become acquainted with its operation.

All work is weather permitting.
