Letter: Deputy backs Donald Smith for Augusta County sheriff

Letters

letter-to-the-editor3I have been a civilian law enforcement officer for 20 years, 16 years at the Augusta County Sheriff’s office and 4 years with the Waynesboro Police Department. I also worked for the Department of Corrections for 6 months. Prior to all of this I was a United States Air Force security policeman and served as a patrolman, military working dog handler, kennel master, law enforcement flight chief, leader of the Combat Readiness Force, emergency service team leader and deployed as a flight sergeant to Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

Combined I have over 40 years law enforcement and combat experience, and I stand here before you to usher in a new leader to the sheriff’s office in Augusta County and that man is Donald Smith. It’s time for a working man to take the helm, a man with new ideas and a truthful in your face honesty.

I have worked with him since he came to the sheriff’s office 16 years ago and there is not one deputy that has worked harder for this community. He has made over 1,700 arrests and taken over 2,200 reports for victims of crime and I can tell you nobody else running for sheriff comes close to those statistics.

His entire tenure at the sheriff’s office has been on patrol and the SWAT team. It does not matter if it’s a stolen stick of gum or a stolen vehicle, he works them all with tenacity. He will ensure that all the deputies that work for you have the same work ethic and be held accountable for service to the residents of this county.

I truly believe in him and his vision for the sheriff’s office, there is no substitute for hard work. I believe that each man running for the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office has a plan of action, and I know each one of them to be morally good men. The difference is that under Donald Smith there will be no promotions or jobs given for social or political affiliations.

After careful consideration, deputies will be placed in positions that will best serve the sheriff’s office and the citizens of Augusta County. A man who cares about every aspect of the protection of the citizens of this county and will work to ensure that people who commit crimes are arrested and prosecuted with due diligence. He will also work to establish a great working relationship with the other state and local law enforcement agencies.

It only stands to reason that it will be a joint effort to curb crime in making this a great place to work and live. It can only be attained with the cooperation of all agencies.

It’s been my privilege to endorse this man and for what its worth its been an honor to serve as a deputy for Augusta County these many years. As one of my old bosses told me once, “New brooms sweep,” and it’s about to become a new era in law enforcement for the citizens of Augusta County.

Please take a stand on Nov. 3 and vote Donald Smith for sheriff. The old guard’s time has passed.

– Letter from Cpl. Brad Young, Augusta County Sheriff’s Office
