Head coach Shelley Klaes-Bawcombe notched her 100th career victory and 50th at the helm of the Dukes as ninth-ranked James Madison took a 14-3 Colonial Athletic Association women’s lacrosse victory from Old Dominion on Friday night at the JMU Lacrosse Complex.
“It feels great; this is the place I’ve always wanted to be,” said Klaes-Bawcombe, a 1997 JMU graduate in her fifth season as the Dukes’ coach. “It feels really good to be having this much success with this team. This team is a great group of women, and I’m really proud of their effort tonight.”
Klaes-Bawcombe’s career record stands at 100-65 in 10 seasons, and her JMU record is 50-30 in five seasons.
The Dukes led the Monarchs 5-0 at halftime and scored the final nine goals to improve to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in league play, while ODU dropped to 1-8 and 0-1 in CAA action.
Trailing 5-0 at intermission, the Monarchs rallied with three consecutive scores to close the JMU lead to 5-3 with 16:47 to play. ODU junior Lisa Bernardini (Langhorne, Pa./George School) scored twice during the run.
However, following a JMU time-out, the Dukes scored seven unanswered goals in a span of 3:32 to build a 12-3 advantage with 10:20 to play. In that run, redshirt sophomore Casey Ancarrow (Jarrettsville, Md./John Carroll) had a goal and three assists, junior Monica Zabel (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) had a goal and two assists, and junior Ariel Lane (Vero Beach , Fla./Vero Beach) scored twice.
On the night Ancarrow had three goals and three assists, Lane contributed three goals, and junior Caitlin McHugh (Westminster, Md./Mercy) netted two goals. Zabel finished with four assists to increase her CAA-leading season total to 17.
JMU redshirt junior goalkeeper Alex Menghetti (Media, Pa./Penncrest) made three saves in just over 51 minutes of play. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Alisa Konishi (Littleton, Colo./J.K. Mullen) finished out the game for the Dukes and had one stop in the final 8:54.
ODU junior goalkeeper Sarah Geary (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) finished with nine saves.
Other statistical leaders for the Dukes included junior Annie Brophy (Berwyn, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) with three draw controls, senior Meghan Wienecke (Baltimore, Md./Towson) with three ground balls and junior Cally Chakrian (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) with three caused turnovers.
