UVa. soccer loads on preseason hype

With its first exhibition contest less than two weeks away and a preseason No. 2 national ranking from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, the Virginia men’s soccer team has had several student-athletes earn preseason accolades.

Senior goalkeeper and 2009 first team All-America selection Diego Restrepo (West Palm Beach, Fla.) has been named to College Soccer News’ 2010 Preseason All-America first team, and junior defender Greg Monaco (Virginia Beach, Va.) was named to the publication’s Preseason All-America third team.

Additionally, sophomore forward Will Bates (Chester, Va.) and Monaco were two players on the list of 39 athletes named to the Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy Watch List for the 2010 season. The MAC Hermann Trophy is the highest individual award in intercollegiate soccer. Voting for the MAC Hermann Trophy is conducted in late November, when a field of 15 semifinalists is reduced to three finalists. Those three will be invited to the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo., on Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, where a news conference will be held to announce the winner. Read more

A celebration to honor the 2009 Virginia men¹s soccer team, which won the NCAA and ACC Championships, will take place Saturday, Jan. 23 in the main concourse of John Paul Jones Arena. The activities will start at 6 p.m. and are scheduled to last 90 minutes.

The event will feature the Cavalier players, head coach George Gelnovatch and his staff. Fans in attendance will receive a special poster commemorating the season. The first 300 fans in attendance will receive a free commemorative men’s soccer T-shirt.

Both players and coaches will be available for autographs and photos and the NCAA and ACC Championship trophies will be on display for fans to see. Read more

Brian Ownby’s (Glen Allen, Va.) golden goal in the 93rd minute lifted the No. 2 Virginia men’s soccer team to a 2-1 overtime victory over No. 3 Wake Forest in the first semifinal of the 2009 College Cup at the WakeMed Soccer Park. The victory sent the Cavaliers (18-3-3) into their first national championship final since 1997, as they look for their first national title since 1994. Read more

The No. 2 Virginia men’s soccer team advanced to the 2009 NCAA College Cup with a 3-0 victory over ACC foe Maryland Friday night at Klöckner Stadium. The quarterfinal victory in front of 4,900 fans sends UVa back to the College Cup for the first time since 2006 and third time in head coach George Gelnovatch’s tenure.  Read more
