Poll: Hillary Clinton, Scott Walker lead field in Iowa

2016Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has a commanding lead among Democrats in Iowa, and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker leads the Republican field in the Hawkeye State by double digits, according to new polling from Public Policy Polling.

On the Democratic Party side, Clinton was at 62 percent in the poll of Iowa voters, with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders a distant second at 14 percent. No other Democratic candidate gets 10 percent, with Clinton above 50 percent among liberals, moderates, men, women and every age demographic.

The Republican field is tighter, but not as tight as one would expect. Walker was at 23 percent in the PPP poll, with Florida Sen. Marco Rubio at 13 percent, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush at 12 percent, and former Arkansas Gov. and current Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul both at 10 percent.

Notes

  • Both Walker and Rubio lead the field in being the second choice of voters in Iowa, at 13 percent, suggesting there is room for growth for each as other candidates drop out down the line.
  • Bush, the son and brother of presidents, is struggling to gain traction among conservative voters. He has an overall 38 percent favorable/37 percent unfavorable rating, and is at 30 percent favorable/45 percent unfavorable among self-identified “very conservative” voters.
  • Whatever bump Texas Sen. Ted Cruz had from his early rollout last month has worn off. Cruz was at 8 percent after hitting the mid-teens in polling done right after his announcement.
  • New Jersey Chris Christie may soon be dead in the water. His Iowa numbers were abysmal: 28 percent favorable/50 percent unfavorable.
