Five ACC schools among Top 20 In Learfield Directors’ Cup Standings

The ACC is tied for the lead among all conferences with five schools among the top 20 of the final 2014-15 Division I Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings announced Thursday.

North Carolina leads ACC schools with a No. 5 ranking, followed No. 6 Virginia and No. 10 Notre Dame. Florida State follows at No. 11, while Duke checked in at No. 20.

The ACC is one of two conferences to place three member institutions among the top 10. For the 14th consecutive year, four or more ACC institutions placed among the top 30.

“Our member institutions have once again shown their strength in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup rankings,” ACC Commissioner John Swofford said. “With five team and sixteen individual NCAA championships earned by ACC schools, 2014-15 was another excellent year for our league.”

In the league’s 62-year history, ACC institutions have captured 141 team national championships and 279 individual NCAA titles. The 2014-15 academic year saw five ACC teams claim national championships – Virginia in men’s soccer, men’s tennis, and baseball, Duke in men’s basketball and Florida State in women’s soccer.

The ACC placed nine schools among the top 50 of this year’s standings, and all 15 member institutions placed among the top 100. NC State finished 27th, followed by Louisville at No. 29, Virginia Tech at No. 35 and Syracuse at No. 47.

Miami placed 55th, while Clemson finished 57th, Boston College 68th, Georgia Tech 72nd, Wake Forest 90th and Pitt 96th.

This marks the sixth time in the last eight academic years that the ACC has finished with at least two teams among the top 10.

The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today.  Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in up to 20 sports — 10 women’s and 10 men’s.
