virginia tech frank beamerVirginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer is reportedly set to announce his retirement effective at the end of the 2015 season, according to published reports.

Beamer reportedly informed his staff of his decision early Sunday, and plans to tell Virginia Tech players later in the day.

Beamer, 69, is in his 29th season at Virginia Tech, his alma mater, and has compiled a career record of 235-120-2.

The Hokies put up eight straight seasons of 10 or more wins from 2004-2011, but have fallen on relative hard times of late, going just 26-22 since the start of the 2012 season, with a 14-15 record in ACC play.

The 2015 season has been the worst of the past four, with Virginia Tech currently standing at 4-5 overall and 2-3 in the ACC, putting the program’s streak of 22 consecutive winning seasons and 22 consecutive bowl appearances in serious jeopardy.

Athletics director Whit Babcock had made no secret in the offseason that he expected to see improvement from the football team this season, though he has been mum on the topic during the 2015 season.
