Women’s Lacrosse: No. 5 Virginia falls 10-9 to No. 20 Notre Dame

UVA women’s lacrosseThe No. 5 Virginia women’s lacrosse team (7-3, 0-3 ACC) fell 10-9 to No. 20 Notre Dame (8-0, 2-0 ACC) on Saturday afternoon at Klöckner Stadium.

Junior Sammy Mueller (Pelham, N.Y.) scored a team-high four goals and added an assist. Senior Maggie Jackson (Alexandria, Va.) fi`nished with five points on two goals and three assists. Senior Avery Shoemaker scored a goal with two assists, and junior Nora Bowen (Lovettsville, Va.) and sophomore Chloe Jones (Slingerlands, N.Y.) each had one goal.

Virginia led Notre Dame in draw controls (13-8), but the Irish had the advantage in shots (28-24), ground balls (19-11) and free position goals (2-0). Both teams notched 10 saves. UVA had 14 turnovers to nine for Notre Dame. Andie Aldave led Notre Dame with five points.

Notre Dame had a 4-1 lead with 4:35 to go in the half. UVA cut it to 4-2 with a goal by Mueller with 20 seconds to go in the half. The Cavaliers scored first out of the break when Shoemaker found Mueller for a score. Notre Dame scored just 37 seconds later to lead 5-3. UVA then used a 5-0 run to take an 8-5 lead with 14:29 to go. The Irish regained the lead on a 4-0 run, before Mueller tied it up with a goal with 4:27 remaining. The Irish scored with 1:30 to play and held on for the win.
