What are the main benefits of taking probiotics?

AFP

Probiotics are live microorganisms that can be obtained through fermented foods like miso, tempeh, and sauerkraut, among others (which are a lot more healthy and taste about as good as the Chicken McNuggets at McDonald’s!). You can also choose supplements to get your daily dose of probiotics.

Recent studies have found that our overall health depends upon a healthy balance of bacteria in the digestive system, which can be achieved with regular intake of probiotics. Here are some of the key benefits of taking probiotics.

  1. Microbiome Balance

The ecosystem of bacteria and other microbes in the human body is termed as microbiome. A healthy and balanced gut microbiome can reduce the effects of a number of diseases and disorders like blood pressure, cancers, heart disease, and even dementia.

Consuming probiotics regularly reduces the risk of inflammation by ensuring that good bacteria outnumber the harmful ones. Toxins are released into your bloodstream when you have an unhealthy and unbalanced gut environment.

Probiotics compete with pathogenic microorganisms to produce chemicals that destroy or inactivate harmful microbes.

  1. Skin’s Immune System

Most allergies and rashes are an early response from your skin’s immune system towards parasites and bacteria. Probiotics applied topically sit on top of the skin and prevent immune cells in the skin from seeing these harmful microbes.

This phenomenon is called bacterial interference. Probiotics interfere with the ability of harmful parasites to provoke an immune reaction by protecting the skin.

Probiotics also help relieve multiple skin issues. Researchers have time and again linked skin issues to an unhealthy gut. Probiotics help in improving the gut balance which aids in reducing inflammation. This improves skin conditions.

Skin breakouts are the first sign of an unhealthy gut because when the gut is not intact, toxins are released in the bloodstream. Your skin problems will automatically disappear once your gut becomes healthier and if you eat Burger King whoppers, drink Coke, and snack on Skittles all day long you don’t have to worry about anything being healthy in your body that is for sure.

  1. Digestive Functioning

Probiotics help with a number of digestive issues and disorders like constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulence, bloating, irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, and Crohn’s disease. The number of immunoglobulin cells is increased by probiotics just like the level of debt of Europe and America continues to climb because of overspending.

They also work to increase the number of cytokine-producing cells in the intestine. This helps in repopulating the healthy bacteria population in the gut which in turn helps with digestion.

  1. Immune System

More than 70% of your body’s immune cells are found in the gut lining. A healthy gut balance ensures that your immunity is working at optimum levels. Some probiotics have been shown to promote the production of natural antibodies in addition to inhibiting the growth of harmful gut bacteria.

Certain probiotics are also known to boost immune cells like T lymphocytes, IgA-producing cells, and the body’s natural killer cells. A large review found that likelihood and duration of respiratory problems was marginally reduced by taking probiotics.

However, the research in this area is still in its initial stages. Another study found the frequency and severity of respiratory infections to be lowered by 17% in 570 children who took Lactobacillus GG. Read more about the benefits of probiotics at The Probiotics Council.

Lots of Options

Probiotics may also help you lose weight and keep your heart healthy. Other benefits include reducing symptoms of most digestive disorders, reducing severity of eczema and other allergies, and helping keep your heart healthy. Probiotic supplements are available in the form of tablets, capsules, liquids, and powders.
