wlogo2Corey Armentrout threw eight scoreless innings, but Front Royal finally got to the lefty in the ninth with a two-run rally that gave the Cardinals a 2-1 win over Waynesboro Wednesday night.

Armentrout (sophomore, Bridgewater) had given up five hits, struck out eight and walked two heading into the ninth. Brent Morris led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to right, and Michael Tomlinson followed with a double that put runners at second and third with nobody out.

Armentrout was lifted for reliever Josh Thorne (freshman, Stetson), who hit the next two batters, forcing in the tying run. Bryce Danielson (freshman, Western Carolina) then gave up the game-winning ground ball to Garrett Flynn, who grounded hard to first, where Patrick Mazeika was able to field the ball cleanly, but made an errant throw home trying to cut down the winning run.

Waynesboro couldn’t score after loading the bases with one out in the ninth, and left runners on second and third in the eighth. All told, the Generals left 14 runners on base.

The loss snaps a five-game Waynesboro winning streak.

The Generals travel to Rockbridge on Thursday.
