VMI basketball to open 2013-2014 on ESPNU

vmi_logoVirginia Military Institute will open the 2013-14 basketball season against The Citadel on Friday, Nov. 8 in a contest that will be televised on ESPNU as part of coverage for the third annual All-Military Classic presented by USAA.

VMI will serve as host for the four-team tournament that will take place November 8-9 at Cameron Hall. The Keydets will take the floor against the Bulldogs at 3:30pm following the other Friday opening round match-up between Air Force and Army that begins at 1pm and will also be carried on ESPNU. All-Military Classic Consolation and Championship games will be held the next day on November 9 at 6 pm and 8:30pm, respectively, and will be carried live on ESPN3.

The 2013-14 VMI basketball slate will have 15 homes games at Cameron Hall including the first visit from Horizon League member Wright State (Dec. 7) and the Big South Conference opener against Longwood on Jan. 8.

VMI will play 14 road regular season games that include marquee matchups against ACC members Wake Forest (Nov. 12) and Virginia Tech (Nov. 18), and Clemson (Dec. 30). Other road trips include East Carolina (Dec. 19), William and Mary (Nov. 27) and Elon (Dec. 3).

“We are very excited and honored to host the All-Military Tournament to tip-off the 2013-14 season,” said VMI head basketball coach Duggar Baucom. “Having these opening round games on ESPNU is special for all the Institutions involved. I am very appreciative to my administration for working very hard putting this all together and garnering national exposure for these exceptional cadet-athletes.  Cameron Hall and it’s energized crowd will be a great venue for this tourney.”

Baucom added, “Our schedule this year is very challenging.  We host the All-Military Tournament which should be an exciting event.  We go on the road to play three ACC schools, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, and Clemson and the winner of last year’s CIT Tournament, East Carolina.  We also travel to play Southern Conference North Division Champion, Elon, and Colonial Conference, in state, foe William & Mary.  Hopefully, this demanding out of conference schedule will help prepare our young squad for the conference battles we will face in January and February.”

VMI basketball season tickets will go on sale October 1 and may be ordered at www.vmitickets.com or by calling 540-464-7266.
