UVa. rolls past Longwood

Senior forward Mike Scott scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Virginia men’s basketball team to an 86-53 victory over Longwood at John Paul Jones Arena on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 3).

The victory was the fifth in a row for the Cavaliers who are now 7-1 on the season. The loss drops Longwood’s record to 3-6.

Virginia is 7-1 to start a season for the first time since the 2004-05 season and the Cavaliers have held all eight of their opponents under 60 points.

Senior guard Sammy Zeglinski added 14 points, seven assists and five rebounds for UVa and sophomore guard Joe Harris scored 13 points. Sophomore forward Akil Mitchell had a career-high nine rebounds for the Cavaliers.

Senior center Antwan Carter led Longwood with 17 points and five rebounds.

Virginia led 14-2 after the first 5:53 of the game as Zeglinski scored five points and Harris scored four in the Cavaliers’ game-opening run.

After a 7-0 run by Longwood cut the UVa lead to 20-17 with 7:09 left in the first half, the Cavaliers out-scored the Lancers 23-7 the remainder of the half to take a 43-24 halftime lead. Scott scored 11 points in the Virginia run.

Longwood got no closer than 17 points in the second half and Virginia led by as many as 35 points.

Virginia shot 51.8 percent (29-56) from the field for the game, including 31.6 percent (6-19) from three-point range, and 64.7 percent (22-34) from the free-throw line. The Cavaliers out-rebounded the Lancers 44-23 and had 20 assists with 10 turnovers.

Longwood shot 37.7 percent (20-53) from the field, including 15.8 percent (3-19) from three-point range, and 76.9 percent (10-13) from the free-throw line.

Virginia returns to action on Tuesday (Dec. 6) when the Cavaliers host George Mason at John Paul Jones Arena. That game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
