UVa. rallies to knock off Winthrop

Senior forward Mike Scott had game-high totals of 18 points and eight rebounds, and junior guard Jontel Evans scored a career-high 17 points to lead Virginia to a 69-48 victory over Winthrop on Tuesday night (Nov. 15) at John Paul Jones Arena.

Virginia established a program record by making all 19 of its free throw attempts in the game. UVa’s previous record for most free throws in a perfect performance was 16-16 against South Carolina on Jan. 8, 1965.

The victory improved UVa’s record to 2-0, while Winthrop dropped to 0-2.

A three-pointer by freshman guard Andre Smith gave Winthrop a 44-41 lead with 10:30 left in the game before the Cavaliers finished on a 28-4 run for the victory. Evans scored 11 points and freshman guard Malcolm Brogdon had eight points in the UVa run.

Scott scored 10 first half points to lead Virginia to a 25-22 halftime lead.

Senior center Assane Sene added 10 points for the Cavaliers and Brogdon and sophomore guard KT Harrell each had eight points for UVa.

Senior guard Reggie Middleton led Winthrop with 16 points and senior guard Andre Jones had 12 points.

Virginia outrebounded Winthrop 33-20 with sophomore forward Akil Mitchell adding seven rebounds for the Cavaliers. Sophomore forward Joab Jerome led the Eagles with six rebounds.

UVa shot 47.8 percent (22-46) from the field, including 33.3 percent (6-18) from three-point range. Winthrop shot 40.5 percent (17-42) from the field, including 38.5 percent (5-13) from three-point range, and the Eagles made 47.4 percent (9-19) of their free throw attempts.
