Shenandoah National Park to implement night closures of Skyline Drive

Park Superintendent Jim Northup announced today that portions of the Skyline Drive, the famed mountain road through Shenandoah National Park, will be closed at night during hunting season. He noted that this is the 33rd year that this closure has been undertaken and stressed its importance in reducing illegal hunting activity within the park.

Beverley Manor students watch – and feed – the bears

The Wildlife Center of Virginia is currently treating a record 16 black bear cubs – and these cubs have been the featured “stars” of Critter Cam, the Center’s live camera feed. Students at Beverley Manor Elementary School in Staunton have been watching the bears … and decided to take the next step to help the Center feed the bears.

The production of sugar has indeed taken a huge environmental toll. “Sugar has arguably had as great an impact on the environment as any other agricultural commodity,” reports the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), citing biodiversity loss as a result of the “wholesale conversion of habitat on tropical islands and on coastal areas” to grow sugar.
