Through a project funded by the Virginia Environmental Endowment, several local governments in the Shenandoah Valley have been improving their capabilities to detect and eliminate sources of water pollution that are hidden from view, known as illicit discharges, which research suggests can contribute significantly to impairments of streams and rivers.

Governor Terry McAuliffe joined officials from the city of Hopewell and other partners today to break ground for an innovative project that will significantly improve water quality in the James River, and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay.

First proposed in 2001, the Cape Wind Project aims to put 130 wind turbines across 24 square miles of Horseshoe Shoal almost five miles offshore of Massachusetts’ Cape Cod to generate some 1,500 gigawatt hours of electricity per year from clean, renewable wind power.

A group of Bridgewater College students and a faculty member will trade suntan lotion and swim suits for hammers and tool belts as they spend spring break volunteering as construction workers with Habitat for Humanity’s Collegiate Challenge Spring Break 2015.

Turner Distinguished Professor of History at Bridgewater College, will speak about his book, Gettysburg Religion: Refinement, Diversity, and Race in the Antebellum and Civil War Border North, at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 19, in the Carter Center for Worship and Music at Bridgewater College.

Jack Kangas, a former strategic planner and arms control negotiator with the Pentagon and the U.S. State Department, will speak at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, in Cole Hall at Bridgewater College.
