Satyendra Huja, Mayor of Charlottesville, is once again joining mayors across the country in asking residents to make a commitment to conserve water and cut pollution by taking part in the 4th Annual Wyland Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation from April 1st -30th. This annual competition is aimed at drastically slashing water and energy use across the nation – and in return residents have a chance to win water and energy conservation prizes… including a new Toyota Prius!
The Wyland Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation is a non-profit national community service campaign to engage leaders and inspire their residents to make a series of informative water and energy-saving lifestyle changes.
Mayor Huja is encouraging Charlottesville residents to conserve water, save energy, and reduce pollution throughout the month of April by registering atwww.mywaterpledge.com and making a pledge.
“The City of Charlottesville has a long history of being proactive in saving water and conserving energy,” said Mayor Huja. “This is just one more way for the City and our residents to reaffirm our commitment to responsible stewardship of our resources. Something as simple as turning off a faucet while you brush your teeth can save up to four gallons of water a day.”
Last year, residents from over 3,600 cities in all 50 U.S. states made pledges to reduce their annual consumption of freshwater by 1.4 billion gallons, reduce waste by 36 million pounds, and prevented more than 179,000 pounds of hazardous waste from entering our watersheds. Charlottesville placed third in its population category (30,000 – 99,999 residents). This year, the City of Charlottesville is challenging its residents to improve its ranking and maintain their commitment to water conservation.
Cities with the highest percentage of residents who take the challenge in their population category are entered into drawings for hundreds of eco-friendly prizes, including home improvement gift cards, home irrigation equipment, and a Grand Prize Toyota Prius V. The challenge also features additional resources for residents to take their commitment of conservation even further, from regional water and energy resource issues to cost-saving tips at home.

The 4th National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation is presented by the Wyland Foundation and Toyota, with support from the U.S. EPA’s Office of Water, National League of Cities, U.S. Forest Serve, The Toro Company, Wondergrove Kids, Bytelaunch, and WaterSmart Software.
