Professional sports, like many other pursuits, are getting greener every day. While pro leagues and teams have traditionally been the last to go green, it has all changed in recent years. Maybe it’s the fact that wasting less saves money. Or that going green generates good public relations. Or that it’s just the right thing to do. Whether it’s any or all-of-the-above, professional sports certainly have never been greener.

If Joelle Hackney had had her way when she was 18, she would have started college 2,400 miles from Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), at Humboldt State in Arcata, California. But by the summer after her 2001 graduation from Stuart’s Draft High School in Augusta County, Va., Humboldt’s steep tuition and other logistical considerations forced her to put that dream on hold.

There’s too much dishonesty in American politics these days, and it’s disabling us from navigating our way into a successful future. My opponent Bob Goodlatte is part of the problem, and one example of this is his major campaign theme that we Americans need him and his party to protect us from some threat from “big government.” This argument obscures the truth.

After last year’s pre-Halloween trick from Mother Nature (a rare October snow storm affecting most of the Northeast which followed a hurricane and earthquake in the Commonwealth), one would think our area would be due for a treat this year. Unfortunately, Mother Nature has another trick up her sleeve this year by the name of Hurricane Sandy.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has advice for Virginians about food safety before, during and after power outages that may be caused by Hurricane Sandy. Sandy appears to be on track to cause power outages in eastern Virginia, and depending on the track she takes up the east coast, throughout the entire state.

Gov. Bob McDonnell has declared a state of emergency in Virginia in preparation for Hurricane Sandy, which is anticipated to affect the Commonwealth over the weekend and early next week.

The non-profit League of Conservation Voters (LCV) helps Americans sort out the good guys from the bad when it comes to the environmental track records of candidates in important high-level races across the country. Besides endorsing specific candidates, the group also keeps a running “dirty dozen” list of the politicians with the worst environmental records. Meanwhile, the group’s LCV Action Fund is a related political action fund that can channel funding to the candidates it supports.
