Gov. Bob McDonnell announced today that April revenue collections increased by 2.2 percent over the prior year. April is a significant month for revenue collections, because, in addition to regular revenue collections, final payments for tax year 2012 and the first estimated tax payment for tax year 2013 were due from corporations April 15. On a year-to-date basis, total revenue collections rose 4.1 percent through April, ahead of the annual forecast of 3.6 percent growth.
Prices at the pump continue to stabilize throughout most of the country. The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was $3.52 Friday, up a penny from a week ago. This price is 12 cents less than one month ago and 28 cents less than one year ago.
A report released this week by the United States Chamber of Commerce recognized Virginia among the top three states in the country for innovation and entrepreneurship. Virginia ranked sixth in the Chamber’s report last year. The report recognized Gov. Bob McDonnell’s “Year of the Entrepreneur” campaign in the report and the role of Virginia’s Business One Stop to help “entrepreneurs obtain the information and complete the steps required to register their businesses and find resources to help them grow and expand.”

March is not generally a significant month for revenue collections, and growth rates can be can be distorted due to the timing of the leading edge of final and estimated payments from corporations and individuals which are due April 17 and May 1. On a year-to-date basis, total revenue collections rose 4.4 percent through March, ahead of the annual forecast of 3.6 percent growth.
Today U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) and Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) introduced the Troop Talent Act of 2013. The bipartisan bill will help ease the transition of servicemembers from active duty to the civilian workforce by improving the alignment of specialty skills acquired in the military with civilian credentials or licenses required for post-service employment.
The Governor’s Rural Jobs Council today released the interim report to the governor. The council divided its work into three subcommittees: infrastructure, entrepreneurship and workforce development/K-12 education. The council’s progress and activities are detailed in each subcommittee report.
As the 2013 General Assembly session draws to a close, the overwhelming majority of Gov. Bob McDonnell’s 2013 legislative agenda passed with strong bipartisan support, leading to the passage of the first sustainable and long-term transportation funding and reform package in 27 years, and sweeping K-12 education reforms. The House of Delegates and Senate of Virginia approved 88 percent of the amended bills the governor sent down.
