Gov. McDonnell sets date for special election in Virginia House District 11

Gov. Bob McDonnell has set Jan. 7, 2014, as the date for the special election to fill the seat of Del. Onzlee Ware, who has announced his retirement from the Virginia House of Delegates. The governor will not issue the writ of election until Dec. 6 in order to give political parties and election officials time to prepare for the nomination process.

Cuccinelli challenges Obamacare employer mandate on Virginia businesses

Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli filed a brief in federal court on Tuesday challenging the IRS’s enforcement of Obamacare’s employer mandate penalty against Virginia businesses, alleging the penalty cannot be enforced in the Commonwealth under the president’s healthcare law, also known as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA).

Winter storm complicates Thanksgiving travel

An approaching winter storm is projected to bring Virginia snow to the west and two to four inches of rain in Richmond and surrounding areas today and tomorrow, likely creating havoc for holiday travelers. The storm, Boreas, made its grand entrance in California and pushed its deadly path as far as Texas creating treacherous traffic conditions.

UNC’s Marcus Paige named ACC basketball player of the week

North Carolina sophomore guard Marcus Paige is the unanimous choice as the ACC Basketball Player of the Week, while Duke forward Jabari Parker earned his third ACC Rookie of the Week honor. Paige scored a combined 58 points in wins over Richmond and third-ranked Louisville as UNC won the Hall of Fame Tip-off Tournament in Uncasville, Conn.

William and Mary football playoff hopes take serious ding with 31-20 loss to UR

The No. 19/20 William and Mary football team closed out the season with a 31-20 loss at Richmond on Saturday afternoon. Although W&M (7-5, 4-4) led 10-7 after the first quarter, Richmond (6-6, 4-4) outscored the Tribe 17-3 in the second quarter and added a touchdown on its opening drive of the second half to earn the win.
