In essence, greenwashing involves falsely conveying to consumers that a given product, service, company or institution factors environmental responsibility into its offerings and/or operations. CorpWatch, a non-profit dedicated to keeping tabs on the social responsibility (or lack thereof) of U.S.-based companies, characterizes greenwashing as “the phenomena of socially and environmentally destructive corporations, attempting to preserve and expand their markets or power by posing as friends of the environment.”

Report: Virginia earns ‘A’ grade from small businesses for second year in a row

Thumbtack.com, in partnership with the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, has released the second-annual Thumbtack.com Small Business Friendliness Survey showing that Virginia continues to be a top state for small businesses, earning an ‘A’ grade for the ease of starting a business in the state and an ‘A’ overall.

In our highly partisan environment there seems to be very few issues that Republicans, Independents and Democrats agree on. This partisanship is easily seen in Congress but is also alive with voters across the country. Small business owners are often no different than their customers in demonstrating divergent opinions on issues depending on their political preferences.

Habitat for Humanity to host spring cleaning Earth Day event

April 20th, the Habitat ReStore will host a “Spring Cleaning” event from 8am-2pm. The event will highlight a special outdoor sidewalk area, where customers may purchase items by giving a donation. Meanwhile, we will be renovating the interior of the store with the help of Mary Baldwin College and James Madison University students. Light refreshments will be offered. All proceeds from the event will go toward building and repairing homes in our area.
