Terry Gilliland joins Sentara RMH Board of Directors

Terry Gilliland, MD, senior vice president and chief medical officer for Sentara Healthcare, has joined the Sentara rmh Board of Directors.

newspaperDr. Gilliland joined Sentara Healthcare in 2013. He is responsible for clinical effectiveness programs, patient safety and quality, and physician integration for Sentara Healthcare’s 11 hospitals, 453,000 member Optima health plan, 600 employed physicians, and over 2,000 network physicians.

“I look forward to serving the Harrisonburg/Rockingham community and ensuring that Sentara rmh continues to improve health every day,” said Dr. Gilliland. “I’ve really been impressed with the people, processes and quality at Sentara rmh. They’re well-positioned to adapt to the new healthcare delivery environment as part of a really excellent healthcare system.

“Having lived and worked for a number of years in a similar community, I understand the challenges of providing healthcare in a more rural setting,” he continued. “As a physician, I bring a unique perspective on the opportunities we have to improve effectiveness and efficiency and ensure we are delivering the right care in the right place at the right time to the right patient.”

Before joining Sentara Healthcare, Dr. Gilliland spent 17 years with Kaiser Permanente and the Permanente Medical Group. Most recently, he served as an associate medical director for the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group, with 1,000 physicians across 30 medical locations providing care to 500,000 members with affiliations with several hospitals in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Dr. Gilliland is a native of Idaho Falls, Idaho. He completed his medical education at UCLA and general surgery internship and residency at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, Wash. He practiced in Mountain View, Calif. before joining the Colorado Permanente Medical Group. He was a Sloan Fellow and received a master of science in Management from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 2008.

Dr. Gilliland is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, is a member of the Western Surgical Society, and serves on the Board for Sentara Quality Care Network and Optima Health Plan.

Dr. Gilliland and his wife, Jill, live in Virginia Beach.  They have three grown sons.
