The community may soon add a new verb to their vocabulary: geek. The Valley Libraries Consortium consisting of Augusta County Library, Staunton Public Library, and Waynesboro Public Library will be participating in Geek the Library, a community‐based public awareness campaign.

And cleaning them up and preventing further damage can be challenging, since much of the contamination has accumulated over time and results from what is known as “non-point source” pollution, which accounts for as much as 60 percent of the water pollution in the U.S.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has issued a record of decision on the 25-mile Tier 1 environmental impact statement (EIS) study of Interstate 66 from the Capital Beltway to Haymarket, clearing the way for the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) to select one or more of the final ten concepts for detailed analysis.

Hydraulic fracturing (known as “fracking”) is a method of causing fissures in underground shale rock formations to facilitate the extraction of otherwise inaccessible natural gas and oil. In a typical fracking operation, drillers inject a mixture of pressurized water and chemicals underground to fracture the rock and free up the gas and oil.

Virginia Gov.-elect Terry McAuliffe on Friday announced his selection of Aubrey Layne as Secretary of Transportation at the Norfolk International Terminal. Layne, a resident of Virginia Beach, has been a member of the Commonwealth Transportation Board since 2009.

Mark Warner (D-Va.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) introduced proposals today to strengthen military whistleblower protection laws to ensure those who are courageous enough to report sexual assault and other misconduct are not further victimized by retaliation.

Active sonar is a technology used on ships to aid in navigation, and the U.S. Navy tests and trains with it extensively in American territorial waters. The Navy also conducts missile and bomb testing in the same areas. But environmentalists and animal advocates contend that this is harming whales and other marine wildlife.

Christmas trees are up in many retail outlets already, but somehow something is missing. Artificial mall trees have their purpose, but when it comes to your home and that woodsy, fresh air smell that takes you back to your childhood, well, the artificial trees just don’t cut it.

As of the first week of November, 94 percent of the state’s corn harvest was complete. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s latest crop survey estimates Virginia corn yields will average 145 bushels an acre, a 29 percent increase from last year’s drought-stricken crop.

We commend Gov. McDonnell for loosening the Commonwealth’s grip on its felony disenfranchisement law. But we need to do more. We hope that Gov.-elect Terry McAuliffe will build on that progress by establishing a truly automatic restoration process for all Virginia citizens who have lost those voting rights due to a felony conviction.
