Chairman of the House Education Committee, Del. Steve Landes, R-Weyers Cave, will convene the second annual House Education Committee Summit, where members of the Virginia House of Delegates will focus on issues that will help ensure the Commonwealth has a strong public education system that produces quality, high-skilled, and well-educated students capable of succeeding in tomorrow’s economy, Nov. 9-10.

Valley Alliance for Education marks 25 years

October marks the 25th anniversary of the Valley Alliance for Education (VAE). The all-volunteer, non-profit, community organization was formed in October 1990 for the purpose of promoting excellence in public school education in Augusta County, Staunton and Waynesboro. VAE essentially builds partnerships between educators, the community at large, and businesses to promote initiatives benefiting local area students in their classrooms.

Education innovator Sugata Mitra asks big questions in Charlottesville

Dr. Sugata Mitra, 2013 TED Prize winner and noted education researcher, spoke to more than 1,000 combined community members at two public talks in Charlottesville this week. Hosted by St. Anne’s-Belfield School, Mitra discussed self-organizing systems in future schools at The Jefferson Theater on October 15 and St. Anne’s-Belfield School on October 16.

The Virginia Commonwealth University School of Education has been awarded a three-year, $615,549 evaluation extension from the U.S. Department of Education to study the long-term impact of the urban teacher residency model of teacher preparation on a beginning teacher’s professional growth and teaching effectiveness.
