ACLU of Virginia marks 50th anniversary of Equal Pay Act

The American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia marked the 50th anniversary of the Equal Pay Act today with a call for Congress to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act. Passed in 1963, the Equal Pay Act was a landmark piece of anti-discrimination legislation meant to be a first step on the path toward gender pay equality, but since its enactment, loopholes and weak remedies have watered down its effectiveness.

According to the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE), energy consumption for home air conditioning units accounts for more than eight percent of all the electricity produced in the U.S., at a cost to homeowners of $15 billion annually. Besides the cost, all this cooling leads to annual emissions of about 195 million tons of CO2—or two tons per year for each American home with A/C.
