Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling today announced the Virginia Mainstream Project’s support of candidates in several contested Republican primaries this month. Bolling recently created the VMP in part to focus on electing mainstream, conservative Republicans to public office.

Members of Virginia’s congressional delegation today sent a letter to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel expressing bipartisan unity for immediate action to avert furloughs to the Defense Department’s civilian workforce, citing the potentially disproportionate impact on the Commonwealth of Virginia. The bicameral, bipartisan group of members urged Secretary Hagel to give the military services the flexibility to further reduce expected furloughs.

After rallying in the ninth inning, the Richmond Flying Squirrels (3-1) walked off in the 11th inning with a, 3-1, win over the New Britain Rock Cats in front of 6,078 on Sunday afternoon at The Diamond. Adam Duvall scored the winning run on a wild pitch, igniting a wild celebration in the home plate circle. With the win, the Squirrels also took the series over the Rock Cats by claiming three of the first four games of the season.

True to form of the Virginia-Syracuse series, it took overtime to decide the 29th all-time meeting, as the No. 6 Cavaliers (4-1) lost for the first time this season, falling inside the Carrier Dome on Friday night to the No. 18 Orange (2-1), 9-8.

Eleven seconds into the first overtime period, Virginia’s Matt White scored his second career overtime goal off a feed from Nick O’Reilly to give the Cavalier men’s lacrosse team (1-0) a 13-12 win over Drexel (0-1) on a blistery Saturday afternoon at Klöckner Stadium. White’s other career overtime goal came against Bucknell in the 2011 NCAA Tournament. Saturday’s win gives UVa its sixth consecutive season-opening win over the Dragons.

The Custin Jazz Series brings two outstanding jazz musicians to WTA’s Gateway on Saturday February 9. The 8 pm performance unites jazz singer Stephanie Nakasian with jazz pianist Hod O’ Brien in an evening of classic American jazz. The evening is one of a kind and made possible by a grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
