Gov. Bob McDonnell today asked for federal disaster assistance to help 28 Virginia communities recover from the affects of Hurricane Sandy, an extremely large storm that brought high winds, heavy rains, coastal erosion and tidal flooding to the eastern portion of the Commonwealth and dropped significant snowfall in the west and southwest. Sandy caused three tragic deaths in Virginia.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia has asked public colleges and universities in the state to provide information related to their schools’ campus sexual assault policies, procedures and practices in an effort to determine their compliance with Title IX.

Daniel Dixon had D2 offers coming out of high school, but after holding his own in a series of high-school all-star games, he decided that he wanted to invest in himself, and asked his parents for their support. The 6’5″ shooting guard from Great Falls, Va., made the right choice, signing on Wednesday with William and Mary from the CAA.

National Signing Day is a big deal for prospective college student-athletes, and the crowded table in the foyer at Fishburne Military School on Wednesday meant it was a big deal for nine young men who will continue their basketball careers with Division I schools.

The George Mason men’s basketball team could not overcome a hot-shooting start by the Bucknell Bison and the Patriots late rally fell short, as Mason was defeated 61-56 on Tuesday night at Sojka Pavilion. In the first of four straight road games, Mason dropped to 1-1 following the loss, while the Bison improved to 2-0.

The VMI Keydets had cut a double-digit deficit down to just one with under five minutes to go, thanks to five straight points by Stan Okoye, but the Army Black Knights answered with a 6-0 run and went on to defeat the Keydets, 80-74, in the third-place game of the All-Military Classic, contested Sunday in Charleston, S.C.

Junior Bryon Allen drained a 3-pointer with a minute left to break a 57-all deadlock then sank a pair of free throws in the waning seconds, and the George Mason men’s basketball team held on to defeat the University of Virginia, 63-59, in both teams’ season opener before a sold-out Patriot Center crowd Friday night.
