The University of Virginia began its annual welcome to its international students this week with free bus rides from Dulles Airport, orientation programs and a large dinner for students and their parents. Just over 5 percent of the Class of 2019 comes from 76 foreign countries.

Virginia junior golfer Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) put together a furious back-nine rally to advance to the semifinals of the U.S. Amateur Championships at Olympia Fields Country Club. Bard defeated Arizona State senior Jon Rahm, the world’s top-ranked amateur player, 1-up in their quarterfinal match.
