VDOT advises motorists to monitor weather and delay unnecessary travel as another band of wintry weather sweeps across the Commonwealth today into Sunday, bringing a mix of snow, sleet and rain.

VDOT urges motorists to plan weekend travel around winter weather. A storm is expected to bring snow, freezing rain and sleet to much of the Commonwealth beginning Saturday.

To ease traffic associated with Christmas and New Year’s holiday travel, VDOT is lifting most road closures during this heavy travel period.

Road conditions in the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands are steadily improving as of mid-day Monday. The region received up to 18 inches of snow, with the highest totals in Alleghany, Rockbridge, Bath and Augusta counties.

VDOT has entered into a partnership with the Piedmont Environmental Council to replace aging stream crossing infrastructure in Rappahannock County with updated designs to help the waterways and wildlife.

Moderate to heavy snowfall is making roadways slick in the central and southern Shenandoah Valley. By late morning Sunday, some areas have reported four inches of snow.

Snow has arrived in the Commonwealth, and VDOT is warning motorists to prepare for heavy snow accumulations and treacherous travel as a winter storm continues across parts of southern, central and western Virginia Sunday.
