DuPont Community Credit Union (DCCU) was recently recognized with three awards for service to the local community from both the Virginia Credit Union League and the Credit Union National Association (CUNA). DCCU was ranked first in the state with a Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition Award for DCCU’s impact on the local community.

WVPT Public Television, serving the Shenandoah Valley and Central and Northern Virginia, announces the premiere of Ethan Bortnick Live in Concert: The Power of Music, Dec. 4 at 8 p.m. At 12, Bortnick—the youngest performer ever to headline his own international concert tour—has so far appeared in more than 200 concerts.

The Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation is embarking on an ambitious project to restore and interpret the Third Winchester battlefield, site of the largest battle ever fought in the Shenandoah Valley – with a goal of completing critical work before the battle’s 150th anniversary next September.

The Rockingham County Fair has been selected to receive three Awards of Distinction from the International Association of Fairs and Expositions (IAFE) headquartered in Springfield, Mo. The competition involved more than 1,100 fairs around the world. The John Deere Excellence in Agriculture Awards will be presented Dec. 10.

Last week several VPAS employees and one intern attended the leadership training for SAIL, which stands for Stay Active & Independent for Life. This exercise program is actually a fall prevention program, but it is not billed as such since seniors sometimes tend to avoid “fall prevention programs” (I’m not old, I don’t fall).

U.S. Sens. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) introduced the Servicemember Education Reform and Vocational Enhancement (SERVE) Act of 2013, a bill to improve the quality of educational programs for servicemembers and veterans and help them transition into the civilian workforce.

Roanoke Democratic State Del. Onzlee Ware announced Thursday that he is stepping down from his seat in the House of Delegates, citing his mother’s health as the issue. Former Democratic congressional nominee Sam Rasoul is among the candidates in the running to replace Ware in Richmond.

Thaler Center for AIDS and Human Retrovirus Research in the School of Medicine and the Department of Microbiology at South Africa’s University of Venda.

Last month, President Obama awarded the Medal of Honor to former Captain William D. Swenson, United States Army, for heroism and gallantry above and beyond the call of duty in the Battle of the Ganjgal Valley on Sept. 8, 2009. Virginia’s wine industry generates $747 million for the state’s economy. According to a 2012 report released by Gov. Bob McDonnell’s office, that figure is more than twice a 2005 estimate of how much the industry would grow in seven years.
