The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a pre-construction citizen information meeting regarding work at the Interstate 64, exit 91 interchange. The only thing predictable about a “short” session is that the days will be full and pass by quickly. We are more than a third of the way through the 46 day session and had real fireworks this past week. On Monday, the nation celebrated Martin Luther King Day and the second inauguration of President Barack Obama. Nevertheless, since the Virginia Constitution calls for the General Assembly to be in session, we were hard at work considering bills and resolutions. All legislation has importance to someone, but overshadowing those bills was a tactic involving redistricting that was sprung on the Senate at the close of business on Monday afternoon.

Valley Program for Aging Services is now bringing low-cost transportation to residents 60 and over in Bath and Highland counties. VPAS offers travel by van to medical appointments in and outside the region for $4 to $10 per patient roundtrip.

Gov. Bob McDonnell announced that the Central Shenandoah Planning District Commission was among 37 recipients of tourism marketing grants totaling more than $543,000.

As the results roll in from a two-year Shenandoah Valley Regional Energy Efficiency Strategy developed and executed by the Central Shenandoah Planning District Commission, the program is being touted by Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy Projects Coordinator, Ron Hachey, as a “shining star” among other state energy efficiency projects.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) announced today that Albemarle, Nelson and Page counties have received U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) designation as primary disaster areas due to excessive rain, hail, high winds and lightning associated with a derecho that occurred between June 28 and July 3, 2012.
