The last two UVa. football coaches responsible for 10-loss seasons – Sonny Randle in 1975 and Dick Bestwick in 1981 – were handed pink slips for their trouble. Al Groh got a pink slip from his alma mater in 2009 after going 3-9. Mike London, fresh off a 2-10 campaign, his third losing season in four years, appears to be on his way back in 2014.

Gov. Bob McDonnell today announced that he will host the 2013 Governor’s Transportation Conference, themed “Road to the Future,” on Dec. 4-6. The conference, which will highlight Virginia’s continued move towards improvements and expansion of the Commonwealth’s multi-modal transportation system.

Winthrop took control in the first half and held James Madison at bay in the second to claim a 69-57 men’s basketball decision on Wednesday evening at TD Arena. Winthrop improved to 5-1 overall while JMU fell to 2-5 with its third straight loss.

Gov. Bob McDonnell has set Jan. 7, 2014, as the date for the special election to fill the seat of Del. Onzlee Ware, who has announced his retirement from the Virginia House of Delegates. The governor will not issue the writ of election until Dec. 6 in order to give political parties and election officials time to prepare for the nomination process.

Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli filed a brief in federal court on Tuesday challenging the IRS’s enforcement of Obamacare’s employer mandate penalty against Virginia businesses, alleging the penalty cannot be enforced in the Commonwealth under the president’s healthcare law, also known as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA).

An approaching winter storm is projected to bring Virginia snow to the west and two to four inches of rain in Richmond and surrounding areas today and tomorrow, likely creating havoc for holiday travelers.
