“If [Governor-elect] Mr. McAuliffe thinks he can usurp powers of the legislature, he’s courting a divorce before the honeymoon… this is Virginia, not Washington.” That’s what I told the Charlottesville NBC affiliate recently when asked to comment about McAuliffe’s plan to extend special protections to certain classes of state employees.

Gov.-elect Terry McAuliffe has made it clear that he will push for the expansion of the state’s Medicaid program. Republicans in the Virginia General Assembly have made it clear that they are opposed to Medicaid expansion.

Republicans are falling all over themselves to protect the free speech rights of “Duck Dynasty” patriarch Phil Robertson. But if a Senate Democrat dares to say anything that a Republican considers to be out of line, well, no free speech for Democrats. “I’m not targeting anybody. I’m targeting behavior,” said State Sen. Tom Garrett, R-Louisa.

It occurs to me that Constitution isn’t the problem. The president isn’t the problem — or it’s always the same problem, depending on your perspective. No, the problem is a Congress that plays games all year long, partying and trading favors with special interests, with no idea of its constitutional responsibility or its duty to we the people.

Republican Mark Obenshain has formally conceded the Virginia attorney-general race. “It’s apparent that our campaign is going to come up a few votes short,” Obenshain said at an afternoon news conference in Richmond after calling Democrat Mark Herring to concede and offer his support.

House and Senate budget negotiators have struck a deal that would avoid another government shutdown and would set spending levels for 2014 and 2015 above the level set by the sequester. The bipartisan deal struck Tuesday will go up for a vote in the House later this week.

The 30th annual Republican Advance was this weekend and I have to tell you: the future of the Republican Party in Virginia is bright. At the dinner last night, I shared, first and foremost, my gratitude for the many hundreds of dedicated Virginians who began doing the hard work of the canvass scarcely twelve hours after the polls closed on Election Night.
