What are the political prospects for Medicaid expansion?

If elections were based purely on facts, Medicaid expansion would be a sure winner. The White House Council of Economic Advisors issued a report recently that said expansion would reach an additional 179,000 Virginia residents with lifesaving care. The report also said Virginia will miss out on $1.24 billion in federal funding in 2016 by not expanding Medicaid.

Sixth District Congressman Bob Goodlatte is mocking us in his latest article, “USA Freedom Act Protects Civil Liberties and National Security.” He has been sequestered in Washington so long that he believes he can blatantly lie to his constituents in the Valley. This brazen disregard for the intellect and the civil liberties of the citizens of Virginia’s Sixth District and the American people is horrifying.

Almost two years ago, we learned that the National Security Agency (NSA) was collecting, in bulk, Americans’ telephone records. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, countless telephone metadata records are flowing into the NSA. Since then, the American people have made it clear that we need to rein in our nation’s intelligence-gathering programs and end this assault on civil liberties. I wholeheartedly agree that this program threatens Americans’ civil liberties and privacy.
