Wow, what could have been. Had Gov. Bob McDonnell been indicted by federal prosecutors for his role in the Star Scientific scandal, Ken Cuccinelli was planning a dramatic public break with McDonnell involving a little-known section of the Virginia Constitution.

It’s almost dangerous to say this, but as of this writing, Republican Mark Obenshain has a 681-vote lead over Democrat Mark Herring in the too-close-to-call Virginia attorney general race. And now the focus shifts to the inevitable recount that is to come, even as the candidates jockey for position in the ongoing PR battle.

OK, so he didn’t get 10 percent, and he surely didn’t win. But Robert Sarvis held on to most of the support that he was getting in polls taken before the 2013 Virginia governor election. What does this mean for Sarvis and for the Libertarian Party whose banner he carried? Not much, actually, despite what you’re hearing from the Libertarians.

Depending on what time you went to bed on Election Night, either Republican Mark Obenshain or Democrat Mark Herring was the winner in the 2013 Virginia attorney general race. For most, it was Obenshain, who had the lead in the counting all night long. If you stayed up into the wee hours, it was Herring, who led by 616 votes in the counting as of 3 a.m.
