Virginians can help preserve native tree species by collecting acorns and seeds from 13 species and delivering them to the nearest office of the Virginia Department of Forestry (VDOF). Acorns and seeds must be received by October 10.

On Aug. 19, Shenandoah National Park Natural Resources staff confirmed the presence of a single emerald ash borer (EAB) beetle in the park. The adult beetle was caught in an EAB surveillance trap in the Dickey Ridge Picnic Grounds, in the park’s northern section.

The Lynchburg Hillcats dropped the series opener to Northern Division rival Wilmington Blue Rocks, 6-4, Wednesday night at City Stadium. Elmer Reyes had two hits and an RBI in the loss. The Hillcats scored the last four runs of the game but could not completely climb out of the early hole.
