The No. 8 Virginia Cavaliers (5-1) scored five goals in the fourth quarter to escape with a 12-10 victory over the Vermont Catamounts (1-4) on Tuesday afternoon inside Klöckner Stadium. The win was UVa.’s 32nd midweek triumph in a row, dating back to 2001.

Freshman catcher Bobby San Martin (Fairfax, Va./Centreville) lifted a two-out, two-run blast to left field to cap a wild back-and-forth finish and make James Madison an 11-9 winner in 11 innings over Hartford, completing a four-game weekend baseball sweep on Sunday afternoon at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park.

The James Madison University baseball team used quality pitching and a solid offensive attack to sweep a doubleheader from visiting Hartford, 10-2 and 6-2, March 2. With the wins, JMU improved to 5-6 overall, while the Hawks fell to 0-7.

The VMI Keydets had a 6-4 lead headed to the ninth inning, but the Binghamton Bearcats rallied to tie the game and went on to a 9-7, 12-inning victory in non-conference baseball action Saturday at Gray-Minor Stadium.

The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the VDOT Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

The No. 19 Virginia baseball team recorded its fourth shutout in five games Friday with a 3-0 blanking of Harvard at Davenport Field. UVa starting pitcher Brandon Waddell (Fr., Houston, Texas) worked six scoreless innings, extending the Cavalier starting pitchers’ scoreless streak to 40 1/3 straight innings.

The No. 19 Virginia baseball team moved to 8-0 on the season with an 11-0 win over George Washington Wednesday at Davenport Field. UVa freshman starting pitcher Trey Oest (Dover, Fla.) went five innings to earn his second straight victory, and the offense piled up 15 hits.
