VMI baseball tops William and Mary, 6-2

Ray Lopez went 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored, T.J. Lighton pitched four scoreless innings to earn his first career win and John Garrett pitched three scoreless innings to close out the game as the VMI Keydets defeated the William & Mary Tribe, 6-2, in non-conference baseball action Wednesday in Williamsburg, Va. The win was VMI’s second victory in its last three trips to Plumeri Park, after never having won at W&M’s home facility in the park’s previous 12 years of existence.

UVa. baseball drops season finale to Maryland, 4-2

The No. 17th-ranked Virginia baseball team lost its first game of the 2013 season Sunday, falling 4-2 to Maryland at Davenport Field. While the Cavaliers (14-1, 2-1 ACC) had their 14-game win streak snapped, they still claimed the series after sweeping a doubleheader Saturday. UVa’s 14-0 run to open the year was the second-best start to a season in program history (19-0 in 2009).

JMU baseball opens CAA play with doubleheader sweep of Hofstra

Junior third baseman Ty McFarland (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) hit a walk-off sacrifice fly in game one and the Dukes pounded out 18 hits in game two as the James Madison baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep over Hofstra at Veterans Memorial Park, Saturday. JMU won its Colonial Athletic Association opener 12-11, before taking game two, 18-13.

No. 2 North VMI got 79 points from the trio of Stan Okoye, D.J. Covington and Rodney Glasgow, overcoming Michael Kessens’ tournament-record 36 points and a furious second-half comeback by No. 6 North Longwood.
